Snuffle mat vs lick mat: which is better for your dog?

Snuffle mats and lick mats are the two most popular enrichment mats, and they often get lumped together. They actually do quite different jobs. A snuffle mat makes your dog search for food with their nose. A lick mat makes them lick food out of grooves, slowly. One is a foraging game, the other is a calming one.

Short answer: most dogs benefit from both, used at different times of day. If you can only buy one, the comparison below will help you choose.

Choose a snuffle mat if your dog...

  • Gulps dry food in seconds.
  • Is a scent-driven breed (Beagle, Spaniel, Vizsla, Dachshund) or loves sniffing on walks.
  • Needs something to do on rainy days or in a small space.
  • Is food-motivated and enjoys a challenge.

See our snuffle mat guide for how to introduce one and make it harder over time.

Choose a lick mat if your dog...

  • Struggles to settle after play or visitors.
  • Finds grooming, baths or nail trims stressful.
  • Eats wet or raw food.
  • Is a senior, or is recovering and needs quiet enrichment.

Using both in one day

A day with both mats
WhenMatWhy
BreakfastSnuffle matA foraging start to the day with part of their meal
After an exciting gameLick matLicking helps them come down and settle
Evening or bedtimeFrozen lick matA long, calm wind-down

Use part of your dog's daily food in both, so neither adds extra calories.

What about puzzle toys and frozen toys?

Food puzzle toys add problem-solving (sliding, lifting, nudging), and a frozen stuffed toy is the longest-lasting calm option. A snuffle mat, a lick mat and one stuffed rubber toy cover most of what a dog needs from food-based enrichment.

Frequently asked questions

Is a snuffle mat or lick mat better for anxiety?

A lick mat is usually the better calming tool, because licking is soothing. A snuffle mat is more of a foraging game. For ongoing anxiety, talk to your vet or a qualified behaviour professional.

Can I put wet food on a snuffle mat?

It is better not to. Wet food gets stuck in the fabric and is hard to clean. Use dry food on a snuffle mat and wet food on a lick mat.

Are snuffle mats and lick mats good for puppies?

Yes, with supervision. Puppies often chew mats, so take them away once the food is gone.

Can I use both every day?

Yes. Many owners use a snuffle mat at breakfast and a lick mat in the evening, with food taken from the daily ration.
