Breed enrichment guide

Spoodle enrichment: search games for a busy nose

The Spoodle, known overseas as a Cockapoo, is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, usually a toy or miniature. Spoodles are typically cheerful, affectionate and busy, combining a spaniel's nose with a poodle's quick brain.

Like all crosses, they vary. Some are calm lap dogs; others have the drive of a working spaniel. Watch what your Spoodle loves doing and lean into it.

Energy and natural instincts

Most Spoodles have moderate energy and enjoy a sniffy walk and a game every day. The spaniel side often shows up as constant searching: nose down in the garden, hunting for crumbs or exploring every corner.

Spoodles are usually people-oriented and food-motivated, so short training games work well.

  • SearchingSpaniel-style hunting through cover with the nose.
  • RetrievingCarrying things back, often proudly.
  • Problem solvingQuick to learn from the Poodle side.
  • Staying closeMany like to be near their people.
  • ScavengingA strong interest in anything edible.

Why mental enrichment matters for Spoodles

A Spoodle's nose and brain need regular work. Without it, many hunt for their own entertainment: raiding bins, stealing socks or barking at small noises. Search games give that drive a legal outlet.

Brain work also helps with the breed's tendency to get excitable. A good sniff is often calming.

The best types of enrichment for a Spoodle

Henry plans across six enrichment needs. These are the ones that usually matter most for this breed, in order.

Sensory Search games and sniff walks are what most Spoodles love most.
Occupational Find-and-retrieve games, and carrying a toy on walks.
Cognitive Puzzles and trick training for the Poodle brain.
Foraging Snuffle mats and scatter feeding with part of their meals.

6 enrichment activities for Spoodles

Times are a starting point for an adult dog. Shorten everything for puppies and seniors, and stop while your dog still wants more.

Enrichment through the life stages

Puppies

Spoodle puppies are inquisitive and mouthy. Short, gentle search games, safe chews and plenty of sleep suit them. Small dogs can be prone to kneecap problems, so limit jumping on and off furniture.

Adult dogs

Most adult Spoodles are content with a daily sniff walk, one search or retrieve game and a foraging meal. Spoodles from working Cocker lines may want more search time.

Senior dogs

Older Spoodles keep their love of sniffing. Shorten walks, keep searches on even ground, and use soft food if teeth are sensitive. Watch eyes and ears, which can need extra care with age.

Common enrichment mistakes with Spoodles

  • Only throwing balls. Searching is usually more satisfying than chasing for a Spoodle.
  • Free-feeding. Spoodles can gain weight easily. Use part of the daily ration for games.
  • Ignoring ears. Floppy ears trap moisture. Check and dry them regularly.
  • Harsh handling. Many Spoodles are sensitive and do best with reward-based training.

Safety considerations

  • Check ears and coat for grass seeds after searching in long grass, especially in late spring and summer.
  • Supervise snuffle mats and soft toys in case they are chewed.
  • Check treats and spreads for xylitol and other toxic ingredients.
  • Use toys too large to swallow.

Spoodle enrichment questions

How do I keep a Spoodle busy?

Give them search jobs: treats in long grass, hidden toys, scent hides and food puzzles. Short daily sessions work best.

Are Spoodles high energy?

Most have moderate energy, but those from working Cocker lines can be busier. Watch your own dog and adjust.

How do I stop my Spoodle stealing things?

Carrying things is natural for spaniels and poodles. Give them approved items to carry, play retrieve games, and swap rather than chase.

Is a Spoodle the same as a Cockapoo?

Yes. "Spoodle" is the usual name in Australia, "Cockapoo" in the US and UK.
