Breed enrichment guide

Maltese enrichment: big ideas for a small dog

The Maltese is one of the oldest toy breeds, kept as a companion for thousands of years. Most are affectionate, playful and alert, and Maltese crosses (like Maltese Shih Tzus and Maltese Poodles) are very common in Australia.

Being small doesn't mean a Maltese needs less to think about. Many are clever and curious, and short brain games can make a real difference to a bored or barky little dog.

Energy and natural instincts

Most Maltese have moderate energy: playful bursts, then plenty of rest. Short walks and indoor games usually meet their physical needs, but they still need regular mental work.

Many Maltese are alert and quick to bark, and some are sensitive to being handled or lifted. Calm, confident routines help.

  • CompanionshipBred to be close to people.
  • AlertnessQuick to notice, and often to bark at, sounds.
  • PlayUsually loves short games with toys.
  • SniffingEnjoys exploring with the nose.
  • LearningOften quick to pick up tricks.

Why mental enrichment matters for Maltese

Bored small dogs often bark, demand attention or follow you everywhere. Short brain games and sniffing give a Maltese something satisfying to do, and they can help with some of those behaviours.

Enrichment also builds confidence. Small dogs can find the world big and loud, and food games and gentle training help them feel more secure.

Enrichment through the life stages

Puppies

Maltese puppies are tiny and fragile. Supervise play with bigger dogs and children, limit jumping on and off furniture, and keep training very short. Gentle, positive new experiences help them grow into confident adults.

Adult dogs

Most adult Maltese are happy with short walks, a foraging meal and a couple of short brain games each day. Daily teeth care is especially important for small breeds, so make handling part of your routine.

Senior dogs

Older Maltese often slow down but still enjoy sniffing and gentle games. Use non-slip floors, ramps or steps for furniture, soft food in lick mats if teeth are sensitive, and see your vet about dental care.

Common enrichment mistakes with Maltese

  • Assuming small dogs need no enrichment. Many get bored and barky without it.
  • Lifting them away from everything. Let them explore at their own pace when it is safe.
  • Too many treats. A few extra treats is a lot for a 3 kg dog.
  • Skipping teeth care. Small dogs are prone to dental problems.

Safety considerations

  • Choose toys sized for a small dog, but still too big to swallow.
  • Supervise play with bigger dogs and young children.
  • Use a harness rather than a collar to protect the throat.
  • Watch for cold in winter and heat in summer, as tiny dogs feel both.
